Communications

CICEET’s goal is to get useful tools into the hands of end users so that they can effectively address coastal management problems. In addition to any planned outreach or technology transfer activities, CICEET strongly encourages all project investigators to develop and execute a simple plan to communicate your project’s progress and results. You should also list all of your communications activities in your semi-annual progress report.

FAQ: I want to get the word out about my project but I don’t have time to develop materials—can CICEET help?

Yes. Our Communications Department has developed the following tools for you to use in presentations, workshops, written materials, and web content.

1 ) Project brief: Whenever possible, CICEET will develop a one-page, four color brief about your project. A writer will interview you and develop a draft of the brief for you to review. CICEET will use the finished product online, at conferences, and at meetings. You are welcome to use it as well. Here’s an example >

2) DIY brief: In the event you want to develop a one-page brief, CICEET has created an MS Word template that carries the CICEET brand and has space for you to include the brand from your organization. CICEET is happy to provide editorial review. Download the template now >

3) CICEET PowerPoint slide: Please include this slide in presentations related to this project. We update the messages on this slide, so please check back periodically to see if there’s a more current version to use. Download >

FAQ: Do I have to include information about CICEET when I present information about my project?

Yes, you must acknowledge that your project was funded by CICEET. We ask that you do this not just because we like to hear it, but because it gets the word out about who we are and what we do — and that is very important to maintaining and building the support we need to fund projects like yours. Here is some language and resources for use in different situations:

1. CICEET logos for use on one-pagers, reports, publications, and web sites: preferred size / large / small

2. Citing CICEET in publications: Please use the following acknowledgement in both peer reviewed publications and gray literature of any kind.

Funding and support for this project was provided by CICEET, the Cooperative Institute for Coastal and Estuarine Environmental Technology. A partnership of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the University of New Hampshire, CICEET develops tools for clean water and healthy coasts nationwide.

3. Citing CICEET on the web: Please do it, and also provide a back link to the CICEET home page when you do: http://ciceet.unh.edu. Please include the CICEET logo if possible, and some version of the following:

FAQ: Should I notify CICEET if I present information about my project at an event?

Yes, please let us know ahead of time so that we can let end users and stakeholders with an interest in the topic of your project know that you’ll be presenting. We may also be able to help you with communications collateral for the event.

FAQ: I have some exciting results to report—what should I do?

Call or email us. We will discuss possible communications outlets that target the lay public, the coastal management community, and NOAA that could be a means to share your news. We’ll also support the distributions of this news when possible.

FAQ: Should I take interesting high-resolution photos of my lab and field experiments, and/or my research team?

Okay, no one has ever asked us that question, but we really want you to do this, and then please send the images to us. We’ll use them in briefs and web content for your project.

FAQ: Does my institution’s communications department know about my CICEET project?

Yes. Our Communications Department contacts your institution’s Communications Department to let them know that you received CICEET funding and the nature of your project, and strongly encourages them to get the word out. We hope this bit of matchmaking will result in a beautiful communications partnership.
