During the first quarter, several planning meetings between JHU/APL and the USGS were conducted. The geological structure of the Otter Point Creek NERR site was reviewed and groundwater well sites selected. A winter survey of the site was planned.
The winter site survey is planned for the first week in March. At that time bulk water samples will be collected from Otter Point Creek and the groundwater wells. These samples will be analyzed for chemical species. The well water results will be compared to the Otter Point Creek results to select an optimal sensor suite for the early summer Otter Point Creek field studies. In addition, a thermal survey of Otter Point Creek will be conducted to see if any clear thermal indications of groundwater inflows can found. The instrumentation will consist of differential GPS, a recording depth sounder and a 16-foot horizontal thermistor array.
