Shellfish Beds in Great Bay, Little Bay and the Oyster River. This map, developed for the New Hampshire Estuaries project and published in the Technical Characterization of Estuarine and Coastal New Hampshire indicates the location and aereal cover of softshell clam (Mya arenaria) and Eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) beds in Great Bay, portions of Little Bay and the Oyster River, NH. The map was developed from data generated by the New Hampshire Fish and Game (Ayer et al. 1970, Nelson 1982, 1991), and scientists from the Jackson Estuarine Laboratory (Langan 1997, 1998). Information on current shellfish densities and change in abundance over time can be found in the reports cited.

Softshell clam beds in the Hampton Harbor Estuary. This map, developed for the New Hampshire Estuaries project and published in the Technical Characterization of Estuarine and Coastal New Hampshire indicates the location of softshell clam beds in the Hampton Harbor. The data was generated by Normandeau Associates, Inc. (NAI 1996) for Northeast Utilities.

Macroalgal distribution in the Great Bay Estuary. This map of occurrences of seaweeds in the Great Bay Estuary was developed for the for the New Hampshire Estuaries project and published in the Technical Characterization of Estuarine and Coastal New Hampshire was developed from data generated by Mathieson and Hehre, 1986, Mathieson and Penniman, 1991 and Banner and Hayes 1996.

Changes in eelgrass (Zostera marina) cover in Great Bay from 1986 to 1992. This series of maps which are published in the Technical Characterization of Estuarine and Coastal New Hampshire, show the change in eelgrass cover from the mid 1980’s through the early 1990’s. The declines were attributed to an outbreak of the eelgrass wasting disease that is caused by the slime mold Labyrinthula zostrea. This decline was followed by rapid recovery through natural seed production and revegetation. The maps were generated from data collected by Short et al. 1986, Short and Mathieson 1992, Short et al. 1992, 1993 and Burdick and Short 1995.

Eelgrass density in Great Bay, NH, 1992. This map, which is published in the Technical Characterization of Estuarine and Coastal New Hampshire was based on data generated in 1992 by Frederick Short using aerial photography, georectification and ground truthing.
